Biography
Artistic Approach
Cao Fei represents one of those revolutionary artists which is directly involved not only with the aspects that I have mentioned so far as video, installations, light, sound etc. But she actually includes the “new media” in her art. She is known for her multimedia installations and videos, Cao Fei is acknowledged as one of the key young artists emerging from Mainland China. She mixes social commentary, popular aesthetics, surrealism, and documentary conventions in her films and installations. Her works comment on the rapid and chaotic changes that are occurring in all facets of Chinese society. She has created her own avatar of Chinese city and named it RMB city. In here she projects her vision of the world and depicts Chinese architecture, landscape and images that echo tradition of China but also contrasts it to the dreamy world that second life can offer us. China Tracy is the main character in the avatar that acts like an interpreter and a translator of the Chinese artist and she guides and introduces people to several different multimedia projects through which she investigates various aspects of role play such as: costumed youth and their families, hip-hop music and performances, worker’s dreams and their life in Siemens light factory as well as romance between the avatars.
